Colors of Autumn

Posted on by Angela Kauffman

Living in the Midwest, we don't bat an eye when the weather dips and turns.  It can seem like summer one day and winter the next.  But there's always a bit more excitement when fall colors begin to appear.  This year, I was able to travel out to Colorado to see how they do fall.  We were there at the peak of the color and - WOW - the fall colors came out in all their glory.  I've seen a lot of pretty trees in my day, but I don't think I've ever seen such vibrancy as I did out west.  It felt like God was putting on a brilliant display just for us.

Driving almost 2,000 miles across the state of Colorado meant winding our way up and down mountain passes, traveling a bit too close to the edge of mountain drop-offs, and reveling in some of the most awe-inspiring landscapes I've ever seen.  It also meant that I was photographing - a lot.  Since I probably took just shy of a billion pictures, here are just a few to give you an idea of the beauty we saw.

2017 Desk Calendars Are In!

Posted on by Angela Kauffman

Sorry for the radio silence as of late!  Things have been busy around here - there's been some traveling, some art-making, and some writing happening.  (And just to be honest -  there's also been some serious Golden Girls binge watching.)  I feel as though I have a million creative ideas exploding in my head lately, so I'm excited to share those soon with you!  I will be traveling again later this month (the mountains are calling my name), so I'll have even more new images to share (hopefully) soon.

But for those who like to plan ahead, the 2017 Journey's Eye desk calendar is now in the shop!  You can check it out for yourself here.   It comes with 13 pages (12 months + a cover page) featuring photos from around the globe.  The pages come unbound and loose, so you can choose how to display them - on the fridge, in a frame, on a mood board, etc.  They make a great gift and work great as office decor!  I hope the photos bring you a little joy all year through!

Winter Wonderland

Posted on by Angela Kauffman

Snow has been falling all day here in Illinois.  For many, that would mean the perfect opportunity to snuggle inside a warm home.  But for me, that meant braving the weather (and the roads!) to go 'picture hunting.'  I went to one of my favorite spots - a nearby lake - to see what kind of winter wonderland I could find.  I was the only soul there (of course, because everyone else was snuggled inside their warm homes) and the quietness seemed so loud.  In fact, it was so quiet that I jumped a couple of times at the startling sound of animals popping in and out of the icy lake.  But the quietness of a snowfall brings so much serenity and peace with it, don't you agree?

Christmas in the City

Posted on by Angela Kauffman

A few days ago, I popped up to downtown Chicago to see it in all its holiday glory.  I had a great time catching up with friends, checking out the famous Macy's window displays, celebrating my heritage at the German Christkindlmarket, and basking in the many glowing Christmas lights throughout the city (oh and shopping, plenty of shopping)!  I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and a big "Happy New Year" to you all!

Here are just a few pics (all shot on iPhone) from my quick jolt through downtown...

San Xavier del Bac Mission

Posted on by Angela Kauffman

We've had the first snowfall of the season here in the Midwest!  It has allowed me to burrow in my home for a bit and actually work on some photos.  It's also had me thinking back to a visit to sunny Arizona and the peace that I found at the San Xavier del Bac Mission.  Known as the “White Dove of the Desert,”  the beautiful San Xavier del Bac Mission rises from the middle of the southern Arizona desert in Tucson.  When you step inside, you’re instantly transported back in time – since construction of the Mission dates back to 1783.  In fact, it was constructed so long ago that the land it was built on was originally part of New Spain, then Mexico, and then finally the United States in 1854. This gorgeous Catholic mission is considered one of the finest examples of Spanish Colonial architecture in the United States.   It is a simple, yet beautiful place of worship and definitely worth a visit!

Pura Vida

Posted on by Angela Kauffman

I recently returned from an amazing adventure in beautiful Costa Rica!  “Pura Vida” seems to be the country’s slogan.  You see the phrase printed on just about every souvenir and hear it exclaimed regularly.  In English it means “pure life” and roughly translates to mean cool, great, awesome, etc.  Pretty much everything in Costa Rica would fall under this definition.

Imagine this:  You just spent the morning hiking down a non-descript jungle path that led to a hidden beach.  You wouldn’t have known about this beautiful location if not for the tip from the local surf instructor.  Once there, you lay under the trees on the sand while watching monkeys jump from limb to limb above you.  After spending some time in the warm ocean waters, you find yourself back in town and in an open-air café enjoying a drink made from some of the best fruit you’ve ever tasted.  The scene you look upon is of the jungle hills and the ocean sprawling across the horizon.  As the jungle rain starts to fall outside, a toucan flies by.  You sit back and order your second drink.  This, my friends, is Pura Vida.  This is Costa Rica.

The Power of Love

Posted on by Angela Kauffman

I cannot think of a happier place to be than atop a mountain on a gorgeous evening during sunset - especially if that sunset is being viewed in Arizona.  The sunsets there are not messing around.  Talk about incredible.

One evening, I was enjoying such a sunset and noticed a couple of lovebirds were doing the same.  My first reaction was of course to capture the loving scene with my camera.  If these images don't just ooze romance to you, than I don't know what will!

Globetrotting: Vatican City

I was just thinking back on my visit to Vatican City, which is nestled inside the city of Rome, Italy. I really can't get over how beautiful the architecture and museums there really are.  This tiny country is definitely worth a second look...

Florida's Seven-Mile Bridge

Posted on by Angela Kauffman

Driving through the Florida Keys is truly something every American should try to do at some point in their lifetime.  The views are simply amazing - especially those from the famous Seven-Mile Bridge.  It often felt like I was peering off the edge of the world...

Etsy Finds

Posted on by Angela Kauffman

Hoping you all had a wonderful Christmas!  Mine was filled with lots of family, food, fun, and reflecting on the true meaning of the holiday.  I'm still recuperating from some of the ultra-competitive games that were played with my family (We don't mess around when it comes to that sort of thing.  Getting bragging rights is serious business).  Now that the holiday craziness has slowed and the dust has settled a bit, what's better than doing some more shopping??  Well, if shopping is always 'in season' for you as it is for me, here are some Etsy finds that I'm currently crushing on. Etsy, with its incredibly talented artists, is the perfect solution for that Christmas money/gift card that is burning a hole in your pocket...

Autumn at the Lake

Posted on by Angela Kauffman

A heavy fog + a favorite nature spot = a wonderful way for a photographer to spend an autumn morning.

One of my favorite parks seemed to have quite an attitude this morning - a very moody, dreamy, almost fairytale-like attitude - and I loved it.

New 2015 Calendars are here!

Posted on by Angela Kauffman

Can you believe that I'm already thinking about 2015?  The optimist in me is feeling like it will be a good year - hopefully for you too!  New desk calendars have been added to the Etsy shop, and for those who like to get their Christmas shopping done early, these make the perfect gift.  I made three different styles so you can find the perfect fit for those you may buy gifts for - your family members, your friends, your boss, neighbors, mail carriers (show them some love!), bus drivers, your kids' teachers, or your main squeeze.  The lists can get pretty exhausting, so I'm here to help with some options!:

You can choose to celebrate the architecture and beauty of Chicago all year round...

The style and sophistication of Paris...

Or some of my favorite images from around the globe with the Journey's Eye calendar...

All of the calendars come with 13 loose pages (12 months + 1 cover).  The pages come in a 5"x7" size or a mini 4"x6" and are perfect for displaying in a frame, on the fridge or on a mood board.  Enough talking about them, don't you think?  Shop for them here!

Last Days of Summer

Posted on by Angela Kauffman

As we squeeze the last few days out of summer, one last visit to the beach is a must.  Most people don't think of gorgeous beaches (or any beaches at all) when they think of the Midwest, but the Great Lakes surprisingly provide miles of beautiful shoreline.  Over Labor Day weekend, I was able to spend a little time on the beaches of Chicago.  The beaches there serve as a great escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.  A bit of paradise along the water...
