Winter Wonderland

Posted on by Angela Kauffman

Snow has been falling all day here in Illinois.  For many, that would mean the perfect opportunity to snuggle inside a warm home.  But for me, that meant braving the weather (and the roads!) to go 'picture hunting.'  I went to one of my favorite spots - a nearby lake - to see what kind of winter wonderland I could find.  I was the only soul there (of course, because everyone else was snuggled inside their warm homes) and the quietness seemed so loud.  In fact, it was so quiet that I jumped a couple of times at the startling sound of animals popping in and out of the icy lake.  But the quietness of a snowfall brings so much serenity and peace with it, don't you agree?

Chicago Weekend

Posted on by Angela Kauffman

I've been able to travel a bit lately (woohoo!) and one of the destinations I visited was Chicago.  I spent time with my dear friend, Val.  (She, by the way, is an amazing graphic designer.  See for yourself here).  Our time together was filled with laughing, talking, city exploring, and photographing.  You know you have a good friend when she's always willing to join you on photo excursions!  Poor thing always has to put up with me trying to get the 'perfect shot.'  We made our way around the city, stopping to appreciate some famous and not-so-famous landmarks.  Even though we'd seen most of these sights many times before, it was rewarding to take the time to pause and reflect on their beauty.

This was the most common sight during the weekend - me with camera in hand.

Here are just a few of the images I captured during the visit:

Winter's Enchantment

Posted on by Angela Kauffman

Winter usually makes its entrance with a lot of fanfare.  This year's first snowfall was no different.  As it blankets the city and colors it white, it forces us all to take life at a slower pace for a bit.  Snow's beauty is impressive, but at least for me, it will fail to elicit much excitement come March.  But for now, the white 'marshmallow' world it creates is magical.

"The first fall of snow is not only an event, it is a magical event.  You go to bed in one kind of world and wake up in another quite different, and if this is not enchantment then where is it to be found?" - J. B. Priestley

Peace

Posted on by Angela Kauffman

Well, this has been one crazy day.  Here in Illinois, we had massive storms and tornados pass through.  Very strange for mid-November, but you never really know what Midwest weather will bring.  It seems to change by the hour.  The storms left so much devastation.  In just my area, I believe I heard that more than 300 homes were leveled.  Please keep these families in your prayers, and if you'd like to donate funds to the Red Cross to help, you can find information here.

After the stormy weather today and the recent events in the Philippines, I crave some peace.  Sitting by a sea, walking through a garden, feeling the sun on my face, or hearing the soft, gentle sounds of nature sound mighty good right about now.  You agree?  Do you have a favorite place that you like to go to wind-down?  I'd love to hear about it in the comments below!  I gathered up a few (very) random pictures from around the globe that just ooze 'serenity' to me.  So let's take a relaxing look...

Tree Stars

Posted on by Angela Kauffman

The young poet, Mattie Stepanek, used to refer to autumn's colorful leaves as "the tree stars that fall to us from up high."  What a better way to describe these beauties that God gives us every year?  It seems that fall has officially made its way to the Midwest, so my mom and I went "leaf chasing" yesterday to see what we could see.  Wow -  We were not disappointed!  It seems like God really outdid himself this year.

Steamboat A'Comin

Posted on by Angela Kauffman

Last weekend, I channeled my inner Huckleberry Finn and went for a ride on an old-fashioned steamboat.  If you've been anywhere remotely near the Mississippi (or just a river in the Midwest - I was on the Illinois River), there's a good chance that you've seen one of these beauties floating by.  It's always a treat to step back in time and take life at a slower pace for a bit.  Even more than the scenery going by, I enjoyed taking in the small details of the boat itself.  Sometimes I wish more things were built with the flare and beauty of these old vessels.  So let's go for a ride...

"...'S-t-e-a-m-boat a-comin'!' . . . Drays, carts, men, boys, all go hurrying from many quarters to a common center, the wharf. Assembled there, the people fasten their eyes upon the coming boat as upon a wonder they are seeing for the first time. And the boat IS rather a handsome sight, too. She is long and sharp and trim and pretty..."  -Mark Twain, Life on the Mississippi

Bird's Eye View

Posted on by Angela Kauffman

For some reason when I visit a new city, I find myself scrambling up large hills or climbing a ridiculous amount of steps to get a bird's eye view of the landscape.  There's just something about seeing a busy city when you are high above and removed from it.  It's like it suddenly got a different personality - turning from an extrovert into an introvert.  A different view can put a whole new perspective on a place and allow you to learn even more about it.  Let's see if you can identify any of these locations from up above!  Answers below...

Fun at the Pyramids

Posted on by Angela Kauffman

My heart and mind have been with the people of Egypt lately.  While I was in the country, one of my favorite encounters was with a donkey-riding little boy.  I found him (or should say, he found me) while visiting the pyramids of Giza.  As I was taking in the sights and trying to comprehend the pyramids’ magnitude, it became apparent that I had a ‘shadow’ following me around.  He didn’t say a word but followed my every move – all while aboard his trusty donkey.  I finally approached him and a huge smile enveloped his face.  He was so excited to talk with an American!  He didn’t attend school, but instead spent his days at the pyramids with his father, whose job it was to lead tourists on camel rides.  I gave my new friend a gift of what I thought was a simple stick of gum, but to him it was a great treasure.  We eventually parted ways, but I later saw him huddled with another young boy - both chomping away on the bubble gum.

Other memorable events from the pyramids:

-an overly-friendly Egyptian offering my travel partner 1 million camels in exchange for my hand in marriage.  We didn’t take the deal because really, what would someone do with a million camels??

-riding atop a very tall camel through the desert and witnessing a camel fight first-hand.  The guides said that didn’t happen often, but once was enough for me to want to get the heck off my camel!  You haven’t seen anything until you’ve seen camels fall slow-motion to the ground after attacking each other.  Trust me.

-oh… and seeing the pyramids and the Sphinx in person was pretty incredible!!
