The Jewel Box

Posted on by Angela Kauffman

Here in the Midwest, it seems that we are always having a weather identity crisis.  One day it will be 75 degrees and sunny and then snow and fierce wind the next.  But if the tulips at the Jewel Box in St. Louis are any indication, it seems that spring has finally sprung!  Don't the tulips themselves remind you of little jewels dotting the landscape?  Wishing you all a blessed Easter and a happy spring!

Muhammad Ali Mosque (Part 2)

Posted on by Angela Kauffman

One of my favorite places that I visited when I was in Cairo was the Muhammad Ali Mosque.  It took 18 years to build and was started way back in 1839.  You can see the beautiful courtyard and entrance in my last post here, but now let's take a peek inside.  Once I entered, I knew I was in a place unlike any I'd ever been before.  The contrast of darkness/light and beauty/decay made the Mosque a unique and memorable destination.

Peace

Well, this has been one crazy day.  Here in Illinois, we had massive storms and tornados pass through.  Very strange for mid-November, but you never really know what Midwest weather will bring.  It seems to change by the hour.  The storms left so much devastation.  In just my area, I believe I heard that more than 300 homes were leveled.  Please keep these families in your prayers, and if you'd like to donate funds to the Red Cross to help, you can find information here.

After the stormy weather today and the recent events in the Philippines, I crave some peace.  Sitting by a sea, walking through a garden, feeling the sun on my face, or hearing the soft, gentle sounds of nature sound mighty good right about now.  You agree?  Do you have a favorite place that you like to go to wind-down?  I'd love to hear about it in the comments below!  I gathered up a few (very) random pictures from around the globe that just ooze 'serenity' to me.  So let's take a relaxing look...

Antelope Canyon

Posted on by Angela Kauffman

Once when visiting Arizona, I was able to go to the gorgeous slot canyon known as Antelope Canyon.  I had the great privilege of exploring the canyon with the Native American family that now owns the land.  After a very(!) bumpy ride through the desert in an old truck, we reached the canyon and the family led me into this amazing natural wonder. As we explored, they explained the names that had been given to the different rock formations.  While they spoke, all of the scenes around me seemed to take on a life-like quality.  I could clearly see the "dragon" and "man's face" they spoke of.

Antelope Canyon is a photographer's dream.  My hosts let me borrow their tripod and I snapped away on my film SLR.  Film allowed the colors and gritty feel of the canyon to shine through.  My guides climbed the rocks and perched themselves high above - and just watched me work.  After doing what felt like gymnastics to get the perfect shots, I was reluctant to leave the canyon.  What a magical, inspiring place.  I'm so thankful to my hosts for allowing me to experience this natural wonder in such an intimate and personal way!

Lazy Days in London

Posted on by Angela Kauffman

Whenever Spring finally decides to make her grand debut, the sunshine seems like an invitation to head outdoors.  My favorite outdoor destinations usually involve a park of some sort.  Back when I lived in London, it seemed like the whole city would flock to the beautiful parks when even a glimmer of sunshine would peek through the clouds.  I could always find an excuse to spend a lazy day in the park - reading, writing, photographing, picnicking, people-watching...

Vatican City

Since the election of a new Pope, all eyes have been on Rome and Vatican City lately.  I'm reminded of my visit to Vatican City and how surprised I was by the amount of beauty there.  The Vatican Museums are packed to the brim with breathtaking art and history and the surrounding city is dripping with Italian atmosphere.  I'd love to visit again someday.  But for now, let's visit in pictures, shall we?
